Long Beach Comic Expo Welcomes Captain Marvel

On Saturday, February 16, 2019 in room 104A at 11:30am PST, Ivan Cohen, Director of Programming for MAD Event, will moderate an intuitive discussion featuring comic superstars Gerry Conway (Ms. Marvel) and Margaret Stohl (The Life of Captain Marvel). The panel, titled “Captain Marvel: Origins,” focuses on the emergence of the Captain Marvel legacy and the character’s evolution, leading up to her on-screen debut in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, releasing in theaters everywhere on March 8th.

Immediately following “Captain Marvel: Origins” will be a special Captain Marvel-supported panel titled “Higher, Further, Faster: They Lead The Way,” in which four female pop-culture veterans will take part in a candid discussion about their experiences as pioneers in their chosen fields. The iconic women will share their stories of the successes they've had and the challenges they've faced in comic editing and writing, journalism, conventions, and cosplay, and how bearing the mark of a trailblazer can be rewarding, frustrating, alienating, and fulfilling — all in equal measure! Panelists include Barbra Dillon (Co-Founder and EIC - Fanbase Press), Ivy Doomkitty (International Cosplay Superstar), Martha Donato (Founder - Long Beach Comic Con and Expo), and Barbara Randall Kesel (Writer and Editor - DC Comics, CrossGen, Dark Horse).

In addition to the two compelling back-to-back panels, Long Beach Comic Expo will also host a large Captain Marvel-themed exhibit with tons of officially-licensed merchandise. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to enter to win Fandango tickets to see Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel in theaters. Lastly, guests have the ability to take photos with a Goose the Cat backdrop and another with an oversized Captain Marvel teaser poster.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” opens on March 8, 2019 in U.S. theaters. Reserve your tickets online today: https://www.fandango.com/captain-marvel-2019-188283/movie-overview.

For a deeper look into the expo, here are just a few of the exciting panels and activities you’ll be able to enjoy at the show:

Captain Marvel: Origins: A look at Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, with two of the writers who know her best: Gerry Conway, who introduced the "Ms. Marvel" version of Carol in the 1970s Ms. Marvel comic series; and bestselling novelist Margaret Stohl, whose The Life of Captain Marvel comic retold the character's history as a lead-in to the upcoming feature film starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.

Space Expo: A con-within-a-con experience that’s all about space exploration and hands-on STEM education! Featuring experts in their respective scientific fields, kids (and kids-at-heart) can have fun with science-based interactive experiments! Space Expo's Guests of Honor are NASA InSight scientist Farah Alibay and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer Troy Lee Hudson.

C3 Presents: Comics: Breaking In and Staying In: The road to a career in comics and the creative arts can take many twists and turns — and they don't stop once you get in. Join Marvel Comics publisher John Nee, DC Comics/Valiant Comics/Lion Forge editor Joseph Illidge, artist James Jameson (American Gods), and cartoonist Javier Hernandez (El Muerto) for a riveting discussion of the different ways they've developed their careers.

Women on the Dark Side: Not all female artists and creators are about unicorns and glittery vampires. Hosted by Anne Toole (HALO: Lone Wolf), Kate Jonez (author, Santa Muerte), Susan Lee (Wraith of Love), and Madeleine Holly-Rosing (Boston Metaphysical Society), attendees can get some critical insight from women who create truly dark and challenging art and content, with just a touch of humor and whimsy. Whether it’s comic books, novels, or art, these are the women who are creating content that connects with our deeper, darker side.
